The Furnace Door Fell Silent and Spoke Again-

English 原文
No hiss rose from the crucible when Joel stepped through the wide sliding door, and the quiet unsettled the sand-floored shed. Heat still shimmered in undulating sheets between him and the orange mouth of the furnace, yet the space behind that glow felt hollow, as though a note in a familiar chord had vanished. Kestrel polished a pair of long tongs near the pouring station; each stroke of cloth left a faint stripe on the dark metal and threw a brief glint onto the brick wall. Neither spoke. The missing sound lingered like a question neither tool nor flame cared to answer.
A billowy puff of steam usually drifted above the moulding bench when damp sand met hot iron, but the rafters today kept only thin air and the restless flutter of a sparrow. Joel pressed his palm against a brick three paces from the furnace; warmth grazed his skin, yet the surface startled him by staying merely lukewarm. On the bench waited two wooden frames packed with firm, fine sand; their cavities formed overlapping petals, a water lily cast requested by a client months earlier. Light from the charging door moved across those petals, slipped away, then searched for them again, as if trying to remember where they belonged.
Joel lifted a shovel of coke, paused halfway, and studied the crucible. The color at its rim had cooled to a dull cherry, and a skin already filmed across the iron inside. He set the shovel back, wiping grit from his fingers onto his apron, then cleared his throat. "It never cooled this fast before." Kestrel crouched, traced a slim vent channel in the sand, and uncovered a clump that blocked the exit hole; a single tap sent it crumbling. Fresh air kissed the furnace throat, the grate brightened, and a vivacious flame licked upward, loud enough to nudge silence aside. Joel retrieved the shovel, tipped the coke in, and the hiss returned, faint but undeniable.
Moments later the crucible tilted; liquid iron descended in a slow, glowing ribbon and filled the waiting mold, its weight tugging the tongs as Joel and Kestrel steadied the pour. The stream spread through each channel, met the sand, and sighed, thin vapor curling where petals would soon harden. Near the doorway, the sliding panel thrummed gently; inside, the furnace door, once mute, now pulsed orange and breathed a steady, low hiss into the luminous air.
