Sticky Oil Beneath the Escape Wheel-

English 原文
Every morning Noemi slid the brass dust cover aside with the same measured breath, yet today a faint jitter trembled through the balance wheel beneath her loupe. Her fingertip tapped the felt. The escape wheel advanced one tooth, froze, then clicked again when the slim pallet fork rocked back. That tiny choreography revealed a mechanism’s secret rhythm instead of the steady sweep she expected. Across the desk Sawyer leaned in, his headband loupe upside-down on the bench, watching silent. Under the lamp the still air and gentle warmth formed atmospheric conditions so stable that dust hung motionless. The desk became a stage for motion measured in fractions of millimeters. Reverence lingered between them, finer than the breath of watch oil.
Noemi lifted the mainspring barrel. The blued steel coil inside still smelled raw, a fresh tang that set it apart from the mellow scent of seasoned brass plates beside it. She turned the barrel gently, and a ribbon of light ran along the coil, revealing a greasy patch where oil had thickened with age. A cluster of screws lay nearby; she herded them back into their groove with the side of a brush so none skated off the felt. Each click of metal on metal could foster curiosity in anyone who leaned close, drawing Sawyer’s shadow nearer. Yet neither chose to engage in dialogue; only their tools spoke, tapping and sliding in patient counterpoint.
Sawyer slipped his loupe over his eye and nudged the escape wheel with a wood pick. The wheel shifted, stalled, then twitched, its hesitation echoing the opening jitter. Noemi’s thumb hovered above the regulator screw, paused, then withdrew as she reached for a fresh sliver of pegwood. "Looks gummy there," Sawyer murmured, the loupe lens glinting. She pressed the stick against the jewel bearing; a dark bead of sticky oil crept out and spread across the ruby face. The wheel spun free, and the earlier suspicion altered; the timekeeper’s stumble belonged to aged lubricant, not fractured metal. Beside her, the timing machine ticked faster, its cadence finally regaining clear symmetry.
With the movement ticking true again, Noemi exhaled, lifting the barrel toward the parts tray. Sawyer traced the mainspring’s rim with a cloth, wiping the raw scent that marked fresh steel, while a distant clock in the showroom kept its separate beat. The lamp’s glare now revealed a fine seam of tarnish on her favorite screwdriver—quiet evidence of countless quarter-turns that would never show on any dial. She set the glinting tool down beside the spent pegwood chip, the wood already dark where oil had soaked it. Her fingers closed around the brass dust cover, lowering it back over the repaired heart.
