The Handle That Slowed the Lighthouse Lens-

English 原文
Cedric cranked the iron handle that lifted the hidden counterweight; the column of gears rose a finger’s breadth, and a brass latch clicked into place before the weight settled again with a soft shiver. The sound mapped the lighthouse’s pulse in metal syllables, a rhythm he trusted like breath. Through the rotating Fresnel lens, the beam slid across the black water, sweeping gull wings and scattered spindrift with the ragged urgency of abandon ship chaos far below. A lone catkin, wind-blown from some distant willow, drifted in the beam, brushed the glass, and spun away, its pale fibers briefly caught in prismatic shards.
A minute later the lens stalled, then lurched, an uneven clatter adding a note of frustration to its measured music. Cedric set the handle down, pressed two fingers against the mercury float ring, and watched tiny ripples spread under the weight’s inertia. He withdrew his hand and listened—nothing cracked, nothing ground—yet the pause lingered like breath held too long. Outside, the wind pulsed against the curved panes, the great lamp’s glow bending and straightening with every slow revolution. Even the tarnished brass seemed heartened by the fresh smear of oil he had worked into it earlier, but the hitch hinted at something he had not counted on.
He circled the lantern room, palm skimming rail bolts, until his boot nudged a narrow shard of glass wedged beneath the drive chain. When he levered the shard free, the chain slackened a fraction and sagged toward the floor-plate. He watched the mechanism resume: gear teeth meshed, the lens began another glide, yet each rotation still carried a faint stagger, a reminder that the machine obeyed balance more than intention. Cedric paused, gaze tracing the beam’s sweep; its path hesitated at the same compass point where the shard had lodged, as though the sea itself marked the glitch with a wink of darker water.
He wound the counterweight once more, slower now, waiting for the next pulse. The stall never came; instead, the lens rolled in a quiet, steady oscillation, the mercury surface almost glassy under its load. No final answer surfaced, only motion restored and a thin doubt drifting beside it, light as that wandering catkin. Cedric lifted the handle from the floor-plate, turned it between his fingers, and laid the handle back onto the brass shelf, noticing a faint salt crust along its edge.
