The Needle That Lifted in the Lacquer Room-

English 原文
Halle paused in the lacquer-room doorway. Wade’s brush travelled across the turning stand, its bristles laying an incandescent ribbon that vanished the moment it touched the wood. Resin and damp cedar coiled together in a tangible aroma that clung to her tongue. Behind Wade, finished boxes gleamed; each one captured light so deeply that the north window looked lodged inside. From somewhere beyond the partition a burst of hearty laughter skimmed the panels, quick and low, then fell silent again.
She stepped in only after Wade rotated the stand away. A clay ladle dipped into the curing tray; another mouthful of water slid beneath the slats. The humidity needle wavered, then settled where it had been, unchanged. Halle added another scoop. The cedar walls darkened a shade, yet the lacquer surface looked identical, smooth as glass. Another scoop followed, and another; each swallowed without a ripple. Her sleeve brushed the workpiece, tracing the cranes etched below the layers—their design pattern lay hidden, transparent upon transparent, waiting for depth.
Wade returned carrying a warm kettle. Steam drifted, merging with the workshop’s heavy air. Together they filled the tray past its rim, water slipping through the lattice until the tray shivered under the weight. Halle reached for the gauge once more. The next breath thickened; a fine bloom crossed the lacquer like breath on winter glass. The needle lifted, clicked, and leapt. What had absorbed everything suddenly refused one droplet more—the system cut to the chase, revealing the unseen threshold in a single opaque blush. Halle’s palm stopped mid-stroke, cotton pad hovering while Wade’s eyebrows rose.
Neither spoke. Wade nudged a corner of cloth toward her; she swapped brush for pad and began sanding, the same long motion she had planned hours earlier. Powdered whetstone mixed with the milky film, gathering at her wrist in pale crescents. The surface slowly cleared, yet the room no longer matched the one she had entered: resin hung thicker, water ticked from the tray to the floorboards, and the window’s reflection burned brighter inside the fresh coat. Halle’s arm repeated its practiced arc, cotton whispering against wood, while a new, sharper scent of charred cedar drifted from the warming kettle and settled around her steady hand.
