Water That Finally Refused the Sundial-

English 原文
Every afternoon Elowen crossed the gravel path to tap the copper watering can and listen for its friendly drip; today, silence met her knuckle. A light breeze made lavender stalks undulate like slow waves, yet the weather vane on the shed roof stood fixed, its arrow pointing east as though glued. Irving, crouched beside the thyme, lifted his head. “Strange stillness,” he murmured, rubbing a finger over the dial’s worn numerals. The garden breathed, bees drifted, but two familiar rhythms—the drip and the vane’s creak—had vanished together.
Elowen tilted the can, letting a narrow stream arc onto the limestone channel that circles the sundial. Gravel swallowed the water without trace, so she poured again, then again, each addition absorbed as quickly as the last. “I want to ascertain where the leak hides,” she said, catching Irving’s puzzled glance. He shrugged, brushing soil from the heel of a sandal stitched last winter by the village cobbler, and returned to pinching spent blossoms. The stalled mechanism atop the shed remained motionless, ignoring gusts that rippled the rosemary.
A fourth pour, heavier, lingered a breath longer before sinking away; still no puddle reflected the bright bronze gnomon. Elowen paused, wrist hovering, surprised by her own persistence. Irving set aside his trimmings and joined her, palms open to feel the falling drops. “Keep going,” he whispered. She obliged, tipping the can until its belly emptied with a final gush. This time the channel refused to drink: a clear lens spread across the dial, capturing the sky in a wavering mirror.
Sunlight burst through a ragged hole in the passing cloud, and the mirrored surface flashed. In that instant the gnomon’s shadow leapt several finger-widths west, a silent record of minutes that had slipped by unmarked. The weather vane shuddered, broke free, and spun once, scattering a faint squeal across the beds before settling. Elowen and Irving stepped back, shoes crunching thyme, while fresh water threaded itself into the gravel and disappeared. Beyond their slowing breaths, planetary rotation continued, carrying every shadow in the garden along its unhurried sweep.
