Sparrow Lifts Fibers From a Wet Paper Sheet-

English 原文
Winter pushed the loft door inward, damp air brushing her cheeks, and a sparrow darted through the gap ahead of her, wings brushing the hanging papers. The bird hovered an instant above the vat, then landed on the frame that leaned across its rim, tilting its head at the clouded water. Beneath that light flutter, the beater’s wooden paddles thumped in the stone trough like a slow treadmill, driving pulp around the circle again and again while Irving adjusted the press screw at the far wall.
Earlier that morning, rows of sheets already hung above the press, each one fresh enough to glisten yet firm enough to hold its deckled edge. Winter’s fingertips tested the nearest sheet: cool, slightly pliant, giving away the transience between wet and dry. She noted a faint sweet smell of green bark still trapped in the fibres, a reminder of work begun only yesterday. Water collected in the gutter below, slipped along the metal lip, and vanished; responsibility for every drop’s path felt as tangible as the rope that raised the press plate overhead.
Now, back at the vat, the sparrow pecked at a loose tuft floating near the mesh. She steadied the frame, hesitation slowing her usual brisk shake, and watched as the fibres swirled away from the bird’s beak in resplendent spirals of pale cream. A moment later the sparrow lifted, carrying a single filament upward toward the rafters, revealing why the creature visited so often: the nest above pressed needed soft lining, not stolen grain. Winter inhaled, then chose a different rhythm, dipping once more and letting the pulp settle thicker than before; the sheet would forgive a quicker press later, freeing finer strands for the visitor’s future endeavors overhead.
An hour after the sheet joined the stack beneath felt pads, Winter climbed to the loft to check the earliest run. The same sparrow fluttered past her knees, vanishing into its shadowed pocket. She reached for the sheet she had first touched, lifted it again against the window, yet this time her hands moved lower and slower, allowing light to flood the rectangle without waver. Fibres locked during drying, and the surface showed a faint gap where one filament had been plucked; through that gap, afternoon sun shone clear, a small bright window inside the paper while her fingers steadied the edge.
