Stacking Stones at the River Bend-

English 原文
Ripples quickened across the bend, their mirrored bands sliding up the willow trunks before fading. The moving light revealed a clean circle of gravel where another stack once stood, a silence shaped in stone. Emmet knelt beside that absence, thumb brushing the dry outline where water never reached. Each pulse from the river pressed a faint shiver through the gravel, like a heartbeat under earth. His breathing slipped into the rhythm, longer on the lull, shorter when the surge returned. Sun warmed the exposed granite, while cool vapor swirled from the channel, the two sensations meeting in his palms. He chose a flat piece and felt it tilt gently, a micro-wobble travelling downward through the empty circle.
Beyond the gravel bar the river terrace rose into reeds and buttercups, the beautiful scenery almost distracting, yet his hands kept testing balance. A wholesome smell of crushed watercress drifted in short intervals whenever the breeze curved over the water, punctuating the steady hiss of current. He set the first stone within the circle, paused, lifted it again, re-examined its underside, unsure whether the base wanted more width. That hesitation broke the rhythm: the next ripple arrived before the stone rested, and a faint jolt shook the gravel like a skipped beat. He exhaled, reset his grip, and lowered the slab more slowly, feeling the tremor fade until the contact clicked almost imperceptibly.
Steps approached, out of sync with the water’s cadence; Lena emerged from willow shade, shoes damp, content to take a stroll along the bar. “Still working?” she called, lifting a palm-sized slate and letting it rest against her hip. Emmet nodded toward the vacant circle, and she understood without comment; the gap remained open, its gravel resisting every offering. They knelt shoulder to shoulder, trading stones without speech; their motions matched the tide’s meter until a deeper surge sucked water from the shore. Gravel subsided, the base stone sank half a finger’s breadth, and the newborn tower listed toward the river. Lena steadied the lean with two fingertips while Emmet slid her slate under the edge, wedging it until the sway decreased. “Good catch,” he murmured at last, his voice no stronger than the hush between ripples.
Light shifted toward honey tones; the time of day when insects skim close to the surface arrived, and the river’s interval slowed with evening cool. Across the water, the yearly reflection of midsummer sun crept along the opposite embankment, a bright stripe that advanced one stone’s width each minute. Neither spoke; the stripe’s progress marked the silent measure they worked within, an unseen metronome for hands and gravel. They placed three more layers, pausing after every pulse to gauge the hidden tremor, leaving the topmost flat and waiting, as though the absence itself decided height. When the sunstripe touched a notch in the bank, Emmet reached for another slate, feeling warmth on one side, river chill on the other. His fingertip hovered above the slate’s edge, quietly poised to test balance once more.
