Kit slid the paper screen aside and stepped into the teahouse. The instant the frame met its groove, the kettle’s lid gave a hollow click, rocked once, and settled; a slip of opaque steam followed the movement like a ribbon caught and released. Warmth collected around her wrists, then spread higher as she crossed the reed mat toward the low table, listening to the faint hiss that pulsed whenever a string of bubbles let the lid lift for one breath and return.

Beyond the table, an orchid in a clay pot stood on the sill. Earlier rain still glittered on the green flesh of its leaves, and a single pale flower leaned toward the damp courtyard light. Kit bent to peer at the bloom, noticing a tiny bead of water that balanced at the petal’s edge before choosing the opportune moment to fall onto the tray below. A sack of rolled tea rested beside the pot; when she brushed it, the dry leaves inside rustled like paper disturbed by wind, then quieted just as quickly.

She folded the wooden scoop through the open sack, letting the leaves tumble into the hollow as if they knew the narrow path by memory. Setting the scoop aside, she hovered a hand above the clay teapot; its wall still held the earlier pour’s lingering heat, neither scalding nor cool. The kettle, meanwhile, sounded more urgent than it looked: those quick clicks returned, yet the water itself had not reached a full boil. Kit paused, fingers closing but not lifting the lid, uncertainty mirrored in the minute shiver of steam escaping the seam. A brief gust slipped beneath the outer screen, fluttering her sleeve and nudging the flame beneath the kettle so it bowed and straightened like a performer unwilling to leave the stage.

The same draft stirred the orchid’s slender stem; the flower rocked in rhythm with the kettle’s lid, and Kit’s eyes shifted between the two movements. Realisation formed through action alone: each time the stalk swayed, the lid answered. The clicks belonged less to the water’s mood and more to passing air that travelled from window to burner, carrying the scent of wet earth with it. She waited, counting three quieter breaths from the kettle, then leaned forward. Her fingertips hovered above the kettle’s bamboo handle.

她用木杓輕撥布袋，讓茶葉順著熟悉的窄道滑進勺凹。杓子放下後，她的手懸在陶壺上方；壺壁仍留著上一泡的餘溫，不燙也不冷。水壺此時響動更急：那幾記輕響又起，但水面還未沸滾。Kit 停住，手指收攏再未揭蓋，蒸氣在微縫裡戰慄，與她的遲疑相映。薄風鑽過外層拉門，掀動衣袖，也使壺底的小火彎腰又挺直，像不願謝幕的表演者。
