She set the board aside, slid both hands into the brine, and fanned water toward the ledge, pushing the silt back toward Ben’s project. Her elbows cooled against the stone while her fingers slowed, tracing smaller circles that never quite reached the barrel.

Ben exhaled once, rolled the tool away, and placed both palms flat on the barrel, feeling for slack rather than force. Ruby lifted the board, now streaked with damp fingerprints, and balanced it on the opposite rim, surrendering the center so Ben had clear water. Together they waited; sand settled grain by grain and the anemones reopened, their tentacles unclenching like miniature blossoms after rain.
