Broken Cadence at the Jacquard Loom-

English 原文
Every afternoon Irving stood beside the Jacquard cabinet, fingers guiding one stiff punch card after another into the reading head; the tempo of ratchet, hook tap, and shuttle formed the workshop's familiar metronome. Today, after the third card, the cadence stumbled: a half-beat pause where a hook usually tested paper. He froze, hand on the next card, listening for the missing tap. The chain advanced anyway, but the shed formed a fraction slower, warp threads settling out of sync with their neighbours. He breathed once, steadied the card edge against his thumb, and waited. The faint hiccup felt minor, easy to blame on oil thickness, yet the wooden frame under his palm vibrated with an irregular pulse he had never noticed.
As the shuttle zipped through, a narrow ripple climbed the growing cloth like a misplaced whisper in an otherwise steady narrative. Irving pressed the fresh weft with the beater, hoping the next stroke would iron out the shallow wave. The loom answered with its usual snap-and-settle, yet the ripple deepened; threads rose where the blueprint showed flat ground, beginning to distort the tulip curve meant for that row. Sunlight slanted across the cloth, bringing to light a skipped purple strand, its colour flashing against cream neighbours. He traced the gap with a fingernail, stopping when the warp tugged his skin. The ratchet clicked again, on schedule, indifferent to his pause.
Zola, returning a drawer of spare cards, noticed his stalled hands and paused beside the cabinet; a questioning tilt of her head replaced words. Irving lifted the suspect card toward the window. Pinprick holes lit up like faint stars, yet one corner showed an unpunched square where a hole ought to sit. The card number matched the blueprint, but the solid paper would hold a thread down that needed to rise. He considered the hand punch resting in its velvet tray; a quick press could open the missing hole, slip the card back, and the cloth might repair itself over rows. His wrist hovered above the tool, then lowered; the error had already woven three visible lines.
He slotted the flawed card into the chain again, accepting the altered rhythm that would echo through the next cycle. The shuttle slid, the beat followed, and the tulip acquired a slight bend—neither perfect nor ruined, simply different. Irving stepped back to the first card still waiting on the bench; under morning use it had looked flat and obedient, yet now its margin showed a thin fuzz of raised fibres, as though the day’s pulses had roughened it. His thumb rested on that softened edge while the loom continued its measured beat behind him, reed, hook, and shuttle marking time he no longer tried to predict.
