English 原文

Every afternoon, Hugo balanced a dented tin mug on the reader frame while the carousel card slipped forward, fold after fold, without complaint.

Today, the first sip coated his tongue with a metallic tang, sharper than yesterday’s mellow sweetness.

The unexpected edge forced him to swallow twice, tasting loam somewhere in the metallic aftertaste while his hand steadied the advancing card.

Bellows exhaled a mellow chord, each puff carrying a reminiscence of lemonade stands and cotton sugar beyond the wooden wall.

Hugo wiped a drop of oil from his lip, finding it strangely sweet, then bent again to watch the perforations line up.

A sudden dull clunk jolted the room; the motor stopped spinning and every note hung half-formed, like fruit held above a bite.

Outside, children’s voices wavered, then faded, replaced by an expectant hush rolling through the planks until Hugo’s knees vibrated against the floorboards.

Without thinking, he slid from the stool and hurried along the service corridor where the main breaker waited behind a metal grille.

He flipped the stiff lever; a spark cracked, light bloomed, and the taste of ozone settled in his mouth, sharp as underripe berries.

Footsteps approached, then retreated, yet no voice explained the stoppage, leaving the hallway echoing like a drained cup.

When he stepped back into the organ chamber, warmth had thinned; the bellows sagged slightly, their leather sides compressed into shallow folds.

The perforated card leaned crooked, one pleat pinched where moisture had swelled the cardboard during the pause.

Hugo paused, fingertips hovering above the misaligned edge, then grabbed the brass bone folder he kept for mending seized folds.

Halfway through straightening, he stopped again, noticing a peeled fragment of card dangling like citrus zest that threatened to jam the reader teeth.

He lifted the fragment delicately, tasting paper dust rise, then used the folder’s blunt tip to peel it free and transform the snag into a neat slit.

A new chord burst out, brighter yet oddly sour, as though the organ now remembered lemon juice instead of caramel apples.

He wedged a thin maple strip beside the fold to keep the alignment, aware that the wood might swell as evening humidity crept inside.

Sara leaned through the doorway, voice low, “The ponies whirl again, and the riders are clapping.”

Hugo nodded, yet his fingers stayed near the maple wedge, feeling the faint vibration that passed through it like fizzing sherbet.

The bellows gathered a deep breath, pressing air forward; each pulse tasted sweeter now, although the wedge trembled a little more with every fold that advanced.

He stepped back, letting the process run, uncertain whether the swelling wood would hold or peel away once the night air cooled.

Outside laughter swirled, while inside a single sour-sweet note wavered above the others, hanging there like an unfinished mouthful.
