Miles bent closer; the air tasted chalky, as if the paper itself left a residue on his tongue. In that illuminated field the scuff expanded into ridges and valleys, yet no grain of dust appeared to account for it. He whispered a question into the circle, wondering aloud who or what had stepped across that smooth-looking terrain.

He had sharpened pencils countless times; the steady twist, the familiar rasp, the satisfying cone were movements his fingers trusted without thinking. Applying that confidence now, he used the point to tease at the raised ridge, expecting it to crumble like ordinary graphite shavings. Instead, the ridge resisted and skittered aside, leaving a metallic tang in his mouth reminiscent of licking a coin on a cold morning. The unexpected firmness paused his hand, a brief stutter that split his routine rhythm into an intermediate beat neither fast nor slow. Last winter’s carnival popcorn drifted across that flavour, though no evidence explained the journey. He rolled the crystal track between finger and page, trying to measure its length, but every shift shattered the pattern into segments too irregular for any quantifiable counting. The rivalry between lens and fingertip hardened; move too close and the circle blurred, pull away and the detail fled.

He thought of brushing the salt away, then paused, letting the memory it carried stay anchored on the paper. Instead, he slid the magnifier aside, drew the specimen tray nearer, and placed the pencil stub beside the fractured cubes. The wood tasted faintly sweet where the graphite had powdered, and the stub, now half its original length, lay on its flank like spent bark. A mote of graphite dust rose, settled on his sleeve, and left a dark smudge. Miles closed his fingers around the worn pencil stub, feeling its shortened weight settle against his palm.
