Pebble Wall and the Sandpiper Wells-

English 原文
The shadow of the leaning marker post had shrunk to half its dawn length.
Bram pressed another smooth pebble onto the low wall he was raising around a warm tidal pool. A sandpiper skimmed across the water’s skin and landed only three steps away from him. Brown flecks on its white chest quivered as it picked at a worm coil, the movement sending tiny grains rolling down Bram’s unfinished embankment. He paused, fingertips gritty, sensing the wall sag marginally under the bird’s light disturbance. Around them, shallow pools mirrored the sky, and an occasional mussel shell cracked with a dry pop under the distant tread of other explorers. The sand’s upper crust felt firm as parchment, yet every step announced a softer layer waiting beneath.
A whistle rap pierced the salt air, and Bram looked up to see Clara waving a flask from the ridge. He left the tools where they lay and trudged across drying sand, boots leaving prints that blurred at the edges. Bright among grey pebbles, a daffodil nodded beside her knee, its yellow flare improbable against so much driftwood. “Plenty of pools today,” Clara said, squinting toward the far waterline beyond their track. “And room for a wall,” Bram answered, brushing sand from his palms before taking the flask. The talk formed a constructive dialogue, spare and practical, amplified by flat water that bounced every syllable outward. A gull swooped and scattered a multitude of crabs, reminding them how the scene could redraw itself. Flask warm in her hands, Clara settled again on the pebbles, and Bram turned back toward his wall across the glittering flat.
By the time he reached the pool, sunlight had edged westward and the marker post’s shadow stretched almost full length across the mud. The sandpiper still worked the shallows, and its probing beak had punctured tiny wells where a thread of water escaped. Where his wall once curved cleanly, several pebbles had slumped, the clay beneath robbed of support. He crouched, palm flat on the grit, and waited, letting the pattern of collapse tell its story. The wells guided his eye: each followed a minuscule rise, together weaving a rich tapestry of ridges no straight wall could survive. He pinched a shell and slid it sideways to amplify the seep, turning the breach into an orderly channel rather than resisting it. Grains reorganized themselves around the shell and settled with a faint hiss, the sound lost a moment later beneath a breeze.
Standing now, he rebuilt the wall in staggered arcs that followed ridges the bird had mapped, pausing whenever the sandpiper jetted forward on thin legs. His fingers worked slower than before, each slow press matching the mood settling over the flat. Water gathered, tested the new path, and slipped seaward in broken stripes that glimmered like polished tin. Behind him, the daffodil’s petals curled inward as the afternoon cooled, yet its color marked the ridge like a small flag. Bram nudged a final pebble into place beside the quiet sandpiper, while the marker post’s elongated shadow draped the reworked wall.
