Each stroke after that felt shorter, yet the ridges grew taller, as if the crust itself answered the merged rhythm with an exultant crunch. Kellan slowed deliberately, studying how the crystals broke free. He never intervened as a curator rearranging delicate artefacts, although the urge hovered like heat above the water. Instead, he let the pattern guide when to lift the blade and when to pause. At the final corner he planted the rake upright, nodded toward Opal, and walked back over the rail, the sun still bright on his hat brim.
The rake remained upright beside the post, its handle casting a narrow, straight shadow that met the bucket’s round mouth at a crisp angle. Salt dust clung to the blade in a thin, glittering skin, and tiny droplets slid from it, spotting the stone with pale moons that would dry within minutes.
