English 原文
A single leather glove rested on the sun-warmed stone beside the irrigation channel, its palm speckled with silt no hand had brushed away. Lena paused, fingers hovering above the damp outline it left, and watched pale steam lift from the moving water. Frogs lined the bank like a garrulous audience, throats ballooning and deflating in unsteady rhythm. Beyond them the fields waited, rows of seedlings tilted toward the bright morning glare. The cool drift above the channel slipped under her collar, a faint shiver against the heat already building along the path. No second glove lay nearby, and the empty space where one should have been opened a pocket of stillness inside the busy scene.
She lifted the glove, letting water drip from its curled fingertips onto the stone. Warm on top from the sun, the inside remained cool, almost clammy, and she turned it over with a cautious thumb. Water seeped from the mark it left in the bank, loosening a ledge of packed earth; the surface began to undulate, flickering silver where flow met open air. A wooden sluice gate stood a stride upstream, its iron handle dark with rust and swollen wood locking it in place. Lena wrapped both palms around the bar, braced a boot against the stone, and tugged. The handle refused at first, then oscillated a few slow degrees before settling again, as though measuring her resolve rather than the weight of water held back.
Splashing deepened below the gate, and the frogs fell silent, their garrulous chorus broken by the new chord of water against stone. Lena stepped back, noticing how the freed flow skipped past a cluster of seedlings she could not reach in time; a darker ribbon already crept between the rows. She hesitated, searching the bank until her eyes settled on a flat stone half buried in moss. Two attempts failed—the current slapped it from her grip—but on the third, she wedged the slab across the side channel and felt the push steady. The glove, she now grasped, had served the same makeshift duty, a silent plug where a proper block was missing.
She laid the damp leather on the ledge again, fingers smoothing the crumpled cuff as though its owner might still return for it. Downstream, the earth began to darken in an even stripe, and a thin steam rose where sun met fresh moisture. A breeze slid along the channel, not enough to chill her arms yet strong enough to flutter the loose hair at her neck. Ronan, visible only as a bending shape near the far gate, straightened and lifted a hand in wordless acknowledgement. His voice drifted across the water, "Level's steady enough," carried by the mild air. Lena mirrored the gesture, then turned toward the silent glove, choosing to leave it guarding its spot. Water kept murmuring past the far bend while Lena settled the stone deeper into the cool swirl.
