Beside her elbow, a stubby succulent in a clay cup anchored a scrap of linen that shielded the table from stray droplets. A saucer with bread crusts and a dusting of cress, lunch’s garnish, waited near the open doorway. Outside, sunlight poured through the gap, catching each airborne thread and turning it into a silver path she could follow with the wooden pick.

A crank turn felt smooth until a gust lifted the loose threads, twisting them around her guiding finger. Tension spiked; the combined strand snapped with a faint tick, its freed end recoiling to brush her wrist like wet cobweb. She pushed the door until only a hand-wide ribbon of daylight entered, wood meeting frame with a muted thud. The air stilled; she located three fresh ends with the wooden pick, easing them together until their twist raised a newborn sheen. Yet in the dimmer room the near-invisible threads hovered at sight’s edge, demanding closer focus than her eyes preferred. That spill nudged the saucer by the doorway, and the cool jelly of leftover broth began to liquefy, forming a glistening trail toward the threshold. Moments later a plump village duck waddled through the gap, its foot sliding on the slick broth and sending a puff of air across the filament.

Ula’s hand jerked, yet the filament held; she steadied the reel, then reached for the succulent, setting its squat weight against the partly open door. Light slipped round the pot, enough to read the strands, while the clay body blocked most wandering breath from the courtyard. The duck, unimpressed, shuffled outside, leaving faint webbed prints where broth and water had merged into a thin, glimmering sheet. She let the crank rest, fingertips wet and tingling, and watched that dark stripe settle, neither breeze nor brightness entirely mastered.
