The ring bounced between rafters, unsettled the sparrow perched above the chimney, and slipped away through the open bay.

That hammer strike vibrated along the brick, and dust drifted from a seam above the aqueduct trench. Barrett straightened slowly; the trench beneath him no longer glistened with the clear thread of water he expected. Instead, a dark stripe marched across the sand, dividing the floor the way a horizon splits sky and sea. Water had ceased; something else seeped—thin, slippery oil from the quench barrel nudged earlier by the hammer’s rebound. The oil crept toward the mold base, threatening to weaken the footing before the pour. A rolling breath from the furnace brushed his cheek, carrying warmth that felt impatient against the cooler air beyond the heat line.

Barrett scooped damp sand with both hands, banking it into a low berm between the oil stripe and the mold. Grains pressed together with a faint crunch, holding firm under his test tap. When the furnace door clanged behind Tobias, sparks clicked inside, and the glow deepened from diffuse to concentrated, announcing the pour window. He slid the assembled mold onto two skids beyond the heat line and unhooked his apron. “Ready for you,” he whispered, stepping toward the wide doorway where cooler sunlight striped the sand. The fresh berm held its line, dark oil glinting along its edge while tiny sand grains locked together like miniature bricks.
