Tilted Cup on Warm Sandstone-

English 原文
The enamel cup lay on its side, rim pressing against warm sandstone instead of resting on the camp table. Sunlight had heated the metal so thoroughly that faint wavering air rose around its familiar blue surface. Selene paused mid stride; her boot hovered above chalky dust, then settled as she eyed the tilted cup. Heat collected on the ochre layer beneath, warmer than the pale band above, a quiet thermometer underfoot. Beyond the grid markers the fossil bed shimmered, baked dry since the last monsoon scoured the valley. She bent, lifted the cup upright, and a circle of darker stone showed where moisture had briefly condensed. The residue cooled quickly, leaving a faint ring that clung to her memory even as she crossed to work.
At square twenty-seven, her brush swept over limestone that held the day’s warmth like a folded blanket. The canvas roll beside her had come partly undone, giving liberty to the thinnest sable brush. Its bristles splayed outward, already dusted white, as though the tool had tried to consume the matrix alone. Jonas, crouched one meter away, tapped stone and listened; a clear ping answered his light touch. “Hear that? Hollow beneath,” he said, voice soft enough that wind failed to carry a single syllable away. A tiny lizard darted across the slab, three quick flicks, then its progeny followed—smaller, identical, quicker. A crumb from Jonas’s earlier gourmet sandwich rested near them, and they nosed it before vanishing into a fissure.
Selene aimed strokes along a curved edge, yet every sweep lifted more dust than the layer before. The difference nagged; dust felt finer, colder, and the bright note under Jonas’s pick echoed closer to her line. She halted, bristles midair; the grid peg beside her no longer matched the measuring string’s taut angle. Somebody had nudged it, only a finger’s breadth, enough to shift coordinates and skew the fossil’s supposed center. Heat gathered in her palms despite the breeze; she exhaled, reset the peg, then altered her brushing path. Fresh strokes revealed a sharper ridge of shell, a thin ivory crescent gleaming where ochre matrix flaked away. The accumulated clues—the cup, the loosened roll, the moved peg—nested now, forming a silent question she left unspoken.
When shadows stretched, she stood, rotating stiff shoulders, and her gaze drifted back toward the enamel cup. It sat upright now, steam no longer rising, but the metal looked blotched, mottled with pale dried minerals. She touched the rim; its warmth had fled, leaving a cool ring that outlined her fingertip with moisture. She raised the finger into sunset light; chalk dust adhered beside the water, sparkling like pocket stars. Leaving the tool roll closed, she walked away, and the cup stayed behind, catching the last narrow blade of sun. Cool air slipped down the slope, brushing her ankles, while warmer pockets lingered above the dark bands. Behind her, sandstone released stored heat slowly, and the cup glimmered against that quiet exhalation from the ground.
