English 原文

Every Saturday Harris crossed the workshop floor before the furnace warmed fully; this morning the furnace mouth already glared brighter. Light from that core spilled across the concrete and made the shelves along the west wall glitter. A slender merchandise display revolving gently on a motor held last week’s small bowls, each catching a shard of orange glow like captured sunset. Usually the bowls spun calmly, yet now their reflections wobbled in jerky pulses, as though a hidden hand nudged the thin tower. Harris paused, fingertips resting on a cool practice pipe, and watched one bowl drift half a turn farther than the rest before settling. The studio’s far corner stayed gloomy, untouched by the glow, the contrast feeling heavier than usual.

He gathered a blob of clear glass, turning the pipe so the molten mass stayed centered, its surface rippling with turbulent streaks of pale yellow. The plan was simple enough: inflate a sphere, pinch a foot, and add it to the column before visitors arrived. Heat pressed on his sleeves, yet his rotations remained restrained, measured to avoid stretching the gather too thin. When he carried the pipe to the marver and rolled once for symmetry, a faint vibration travelled along the metal. The bowl on the display twitched at the same moment, mirrors of some unseen motion. Harris narrowed his stance, drew a deeper breath, and let air course down the pipe. The sphere sagged lower than expected, brushing the marver with a soft hiss.

The unexpected dip cracked the thin skin forming at the sphere’s base, a fine fissure darting upward before the glass stiffened. Harris halted rotation; sweat darkened the cuff nearest the furnace. He lifted a wooden paddle, intending to cool one side and rescue the curve. Yet he hesitated mid-motion when the revolving tower of bowls lurched again, this time without any contact. A gust slipped across the floor, flipping a sketch page near the doorway, and the bowls swung together — the same draft had been nudging them along. Cool air seemed to pull through that gap in a steady thread. The open bay door, just wider than the pipe, formed a channel; warm air escaped while cooler air slid inside. Harris slid the pipe back toward the glory hole, letting the molten end enter the light. He pulled it through a slow half circle so heat kissed every side.

He rested the paddle on the steel rail and let the handle roll a thumb’s width from his hand. The globe at the pipe’s end brightened, surface smoothing as renewed heat erased the fissure, yet he waited, shoulders settling as the glass rounded itself. Near the doorway the slender tower resumed its measured rotation, each bowl now swinging evenly in the steady glow under the slow overhead fan. Condensed moisture darkened the concrete where his sleeve dripped, tiny beads marching toward a floor drain. Beyond the threshold, the unseen draft kept slipping through the gap and pushing against the spinning tower.
