He rested the paddle on the steel rail and let the handle roll a thumb’s width from his hand. The globe at the pipe’s end brightened, surface smoothing as renewed heat erased the fissure, yet he waited, shoulders settling as the glass rounded itself. Near the doorway the slender tower resumed its measured rotation, each bowl now swinging evenly in the steady glow under the slow overhead fan. Condensed moisture darkened the concrete where his sleeve dripped, tiny beads marching toward a floor drain. Beyond the threshold, the unseen draft kept slipping through the gap and pushing against the spinning tower.
