English 原文
Palmer paused just inside the laundromat doorway, watching a teenager rap twice on the side of washer number three so a shy coin would drop into the slot. Beyond the teenager, a single front-loader sat apart: drum stilled, round glass door reflecting the aisle’s glare, an empty chrome stem where its start knob ought to be.
That stem marked a hollow in the room’s layout. Baskets clustered on either side, leaving a neat corridor in front of the silent machine, as if the missing knob had carved out private air. The other washers spun; one quilt continued to absorb rinse water, its bulk pressing against perforated steel. At every rotation the glass bulged outward, receding again like breath. Fluorescent strips traced the ceiling’s length, narrowing the space into a bright chute between metallic drums and stacked dryers. Each time Palmer stepped forward he had to negotiate the aisle, hips turning so the warm doors on the dryer wall cleared his jacket.
When his own washer clicked into spin, he pressed a palm to its glass, reading the vibration through skin. The buzz faded; load finished. He lifted the lid on a dryer, then stooped to collect coins that had slid under the silent washer. A dull disc glimmered beside them: the missing plastic knob, edge worn to a threadbare white. He straightened, turning it over once. The teenager glanced up. “Does that one ever work?” The question hung between machines. Palmer could have snapped the knob back, yet the shallow groove inside was chipped; one twist might jam the shaft for good. He set it on the folding table instead, the gesture light, hoping to forge a connection without words. The teenager only nodded, attention returning to a phone; the gap at washer four remained.
Palmer transferred damp clothes into the dryer, linty warmth breathing onto his forearms. He closed the door and heard the metallic latch settle. Coins chimed into the timer, but before pressing START he glanced across the aisle. Washer four still offered its hollow, drum wide as ever, knob absent yet now visible on the table like a token no one claimed. He laid his hand against the dryer’s round window—same gesture as earlier, but slower, fingertips resting longer against the warming glass while clothes began their muted tumble inside.
