Ben had a thumb braced against a ruby shard, and when its weight found the zinc channel the positioning jig beneath clicked once. The brass lever under the jig tipped forward with a sincere clack and exposed a sliver of polished steel. It rolled back, revealing the mechanism that balanced pressure with a shy oscillation. Ben watched that oscillation as though the table itself breathed, and the sundry colours on the paper quivered in time with each recoil.

He inhaled, selected a thinner emerald sliver, and eased it into the cradle; the lever swayed, then steadied at the very edge of the notch.
