The Wagtail and the Warm Travertine Stones-

English 原文
Bethan's fingers closed around a warm pebble before her thoughts arrived, muscle memory mapping the ledge beside the steaming pool.
At that same instant, a wagtail skimmed the vapor, landing on a sulfur-yellow crust with a sharp, questioning tilt of its head. The bird’s black-and-white tail flicked, and a tiny ripple of warmth brushed Bethan’s knuckles as if the air itself joined their silent bargain. Gas bubbled through the clear center, each pulse a muffled reminder of volcanic activity working far below the mineral terraces. Beckett stepped onto an adjacent slab, boots crunching faint crystals, yet the wagtail held its ground, its small chest rising quickly in the damp heat.
Three moments followed, each one adding weight like layers of travertine: first, the wagtail hopped closer to the vent, where compression deep inside forced water upward in a smooth, glassy dome; second, it dipped its beak, then withdrew, letting cool overflow trickle between its toes; third, it returned a fragment of pumice to the same spot, as though marking a boundary only the bird understood. Bethan’s breath slowed. The minor gestures began to escalate, tail flicks becoming brief flights between stones, wings tracing the seam where warm basalt turned abruptly cool. Steam thickened, then thinned, mirroring her own shifting attention.
She crouched, palm resting flat on a ledge whose heat suggested late afternoon sunlight even though mountain shadows already stretched toward evening. A pause held her there. The pattern of the bird’s visits grew undeniable, and the threshold pressed forward: pumice pieces always landed near floating insect husks freed by the simmering water. She leaned in, speaking softly, "You choose the stones that feed you." Beckett’s reply drifted through the steam, "Or the stones choose the insects." Their words slipped between them like a compromise neither tried to settle.
Bethan cupped water again, this time slower, letting warmth seep into her skin while minerals sparkled on the surface and the wagtail tested another ledge.
