English 原文
Hollis pressed the column release and the enlarger head slid downward, its gears murmuring in the amber light. While her left palm steadied the metal, a slim latch inside flicked upward, then snapped shut again, marking precise intervals. The tiny spring looked like an oracle, answering each quarter-turn with one clean click. She tipped the focus ring to blur and back, watching grey lines rise and collapse on the easel below. Water hissed through the rinse hose behind her, its steady drip keeping time better than the wall timer. Beside her elbow, the bench carried a faint scent of fresh varnish, as if sanded only yesterday.
Flora hovered over the porcelain trays, lifting a sheet of paper with bamboo tongs that still felt new-cut and stiff. The first liquid licked the emulsion like a shallow bathtub, surface tension trembling where the paper broke through. Each second deepened the midtones, and she whispered, "fourteen," more to the ticking timer than to Hollis. The timer’s plastic case resembled a plain household clock, yet each mechanical tick simply marked exposure with unblinking rigor. Grey shadows slithered across the white, meeting the highlights in slow reconciliation that neither girl hurried. Flora dipped the sheet into the second tray, shoulders loosening as the metallic smell drifted aside.
Returning to the enlarger, Hollis noticed the print on the easel leaned slightly left, a tilt she had ignored. She paused, fingertips resting on the cool aluminium barrel, then chose to adjust the head instead of shimming the paper. The carriage resisted at first; the latch clung to its notch, iron meeting iron with a muted rasp. Hollis lifted, released, and lifted again until the spring suddenly settled lower than before, revealing one extra click she had not heard earlier. The projected rectangle shrank, borders sharpening, and the once-blurred corner now carried the same crisp grain as the centre. She exhaled, stepping back so the safelight could wash the easel without her shadow.
Flora lifted the sheet into the rinse, and her shoulders halted when the new proportions appeared; the building’s roof now balanced neatly against the sky. She compared it to the first print lying nearby, where the same roof leaned away, as though the street itself had bent. The extra click Hollis uncovered had nudged every line straighter; both girls glanced up, lips pulling wide before they looked back down. Water from the rinse hose trickled along the bench edge, cupping beneath the varnish and leaving a bead that glimmered like a fresh dot of light. Flora set the finished print flat on the bench.
