When the Loom and the Chickadee Fell Into Step-

English 原文
Zinnia slid the next punch card under the reading head before her thoughts caught up, her wrist following a rhythm learned months ago. The bench behind her absorbed the slight sway of her hips, every pass between card and hook drawing an almost invisible shift through the oak slats. Outside the tall window, late sunlight picked out floating lint, yet she kept her gaze on the stiff rectangle of paper, comparing its constellation of holes to memory. One row down the chain, penciled numbers rested in orderly sequence, and her thumb tapped each corner once for luck before she let the card settle.
The loom answered with its own tempo: hooks tested the fresh card with a collective tap, while the shuttle shot through the shed in a low woody hum. From outside, a chickadee delivered three crisp notes on repeat, and its pattern refused to match the machine, landing between beats like a mischievous echo. Finn kept the foot treadles moving beneath the loom and glanced over, loose grin matching the beat. "Almost there, the picture is surfacing," he murmured before returning his eyes to the advancing card chain. Across the floor, the oil can on the warming plate released an irregular drip. Its metallic plink added a third pulse, and the growing tapestry of sound kept Zinnia's shoulders loose.
Midway through the next sequence the separate rhythms drifted toward each other, almost imperceptibly, like currents turning the same corner. Tap of hook, plink of oil, chirp of chickadee—suddenly all three arrived together, a sharp chord that sent a stirring through the loom frame and along Zinnia's spine. Her hand hovered over the next card instead of sliding it in, an unplanned pause that let dust settle back to the beam. Only then did she notice a faint scratch across the card's margin, as though another pair of fingers had handled it in haste long before she arrived.
She lifted the card toward the window, rotating it until the scratch lined up with a column of holes. One hole sat half punched, its loosened edge ragged where the chisel had stalled. The adjustment would ameliorate the looming flaw, yet a ghost of that scratch would still live inside the cloth, hidden among hundreds of perfect picks. She eased the warp under slight slack, listened for the quiet click that confirmed each weight found its new resting point. Leaving the loom quiet, Zinnia stepped to the front beam, compared the woven image to blueprint, and calibrated tension on neighbouring threads so next rows could compensate. She returned to the bench to fetch a fresh card, and the oak slat under her palm felt warmer, faint vibration joining an audible hum beside the wood.
