The train plunged into a tunnel; wheel-noise doubled, and a pocket of warmer air slipped beneath the door. With it came a hint of char; dry resin stiffened Jethro’s nostrils and lingered. Together they rolled the pear in a napkin, clipped the rubbish flap, and watched the napkin sink.

Jethro rinsed his sticky fingers in the tiny basin, wiped them on a corner of towel, and stepped backward until the mattress met the bend of his knees. He drew the wool blanket over his shoulders, slid beneath, and let the berth cradle his weight. Jonas climbed the ladder, wood rungs creaking once, then rustling fabric signalled his return to sleep. Warm light still pooled around the table, so Jethro pressed the lamp switch; filaments dimmed to amber, then slipped into black. His eyelids followed, closing on the cabin while the wheels outside settled into a slower, steadier rhythm again.

Darkness settled inside the cabin, except for scattered trackside lamps sliding past the window in quick succession. Each flash painted the closed curtain in brief ochre stripes while the fabric swung a finger’s width with every cradle of the long carriage. On the folded table, the water glass continued its quiet performance: concentric rings blossomed, reached the rim, collapsed, and began again whenever the wheels struck another joint. Beneath the table, the waste flap rested flush, a sweet smell collecting under its cover. The cabin carried that small secret onward through the night toward a low outcrop of midnight trees.
