Rain-Damp Strand on the Rope Walk -

English 原文
Darby pressed a hank of manila hemp against the spinning hook, his boots sliding back along the pale track of the rope walk. Dust lifted from the fibres, caught the high afternoon light, and produced a faint shimmer that hovered between the rafters. Zola, a pace behind, steadied the grooved top that gathered the twisting strands. Each click from the brass ratchet agreed with their breathing, marking progress without hurry. A velvety scent of dried grass and linseed drifted toward the open door. He felt the strand tighten under his palm and adjusted the feed so the twist settled instead of biting.
A sharp whistle rolled in from the yard. “The bale is sliding!” someone called, the voice bouncing off the shed walls before either apprentice could answer. Darby glanced at Zola; both sets of hands left the hooks at once, reflex more than choice. Outside, clouds had gathered, and a brief drizzle began to drench the stacked hemp bundles near the door. They heaved the wet bale under the eaves, rope fibres scratching their sleeves, while water tapped steadily on the tin gutter. By the time the bale rested safely, the ratchet’s clicks were out of earshot, replaced by rain muttering across puddles.
Minutes later they stepped back inside, shoes printing damp crescents on the oak planks. The earlier warmth had thinned, and the long shed carried a cooler hush. Darby lifted the waiting strand; moisture had smoothed its rasp to a surprising slickness. He paused, trying to fathom how much tension such softened fibres could bear. Zola brushed a tuft from Darby’s temple and tilted her head toward the frame. His fingers stayed open, measuring the strand’s cooler pulse before the next turn. The rope between him and the hooks sagged a finger’s breadth, a small warning that the lay had loosened. Rain still tapped the distant gutter, marking time he usually sensed only through the rising pitch of fibres.
They ran the crank again; the hooks turned, yet the familiar creak spoke in a lower key, weighted by the drink the fibres had just taken. Fresh and aged now mingled inside each coil, the rope recording the brief storm as surely as a ring inside a tree. Darby adjusted the top’s wooden cone, letting it travel slower so the counter-twist could settle without protest. Water still peppered the far doorway, but thin light returned and bounced off the lengthening rope, a muted shimmer replacing the earlier glow. His thumb rested on the ratchet’s warm tooth, and the next click waited beneath the skin of that poised touch.
