English 原文
The wooden stirring spoon floated handle-down in a bucket of warm honey, its bowl pointing at the sky as though the meadow had turned it upside-out overnight. Ulric paused beside it, tasting a thin ribbon of sweetness that drifted on the air and settled on his tongue like powdered sugar. Beyond the bucket the hive murmured, and every hum carried a faint metallic tang, the flavour of bee bodies vibrating against tin-tipped frames.
Step by step he collected signs the crop might finally be ready: the honey’s surface no longer rippled when a breeze passed; a capped comb near the entrance released a mellow bitterness when a stray drop touched his lip; even the smoke from Ingrid’s idle smoker left a briny aftertaste instead of sharp ash. Speculation about the harvest thickened between them without a word, growing heavier each time another bee landed dusted in clover pollen and walked the threshold with lazy certainty.
Ulric reached for the outer frame. Light refracted through half-filled cells, throwing amber shards across his veil, and the frame answered his lift with a slow sway that threatened to spill viscous threads onto his boots. Mid-motion he hesitated, aware of the stickiness along the pine edge; the wax clung harder than last week. He slipped the flat hive tool—a thin steel wedge—between box and comb. A muted pop followed, and a tendril of honey curled toward his glove before falling back onto the wood, leaving a bitter-sweet film he could taste through the veil when he exhaled. The jolt nudged a small cedar casket on the bench; its lid slid open just enough to show dark, crystallised scraps of winter stores glittering like coarse salt.
He steadied the frame, eased it onto the rest bar, and stepped away so Ingrid could peer in silence. A tractor engine faded behind the hedge; the hum regained its layered chord. Ulric closed the cedar lid, wiped the tool on the grass, and walked toward the gate, the lingering flavour of propolis settling like faint pepper at the back of his throat.
The spoon still floated upside-down, its handle lacquered in fresh honey. The cedar casket’s lid rested slightly askew, a thin line of crystals catching sun beside the smear his glove left. The hive tool lay across the grass, glinting, one edge coated in cooling amber.
