English 原文
Winter edged past the tilted gate into the kiln shed, her intrepid stride slowing as the roof pressed a long diagonal shadow across the packed earth. A dozen stacked shelves crowded the left wall; unfinished cups, plates, and narrow vases hid behind one another like travelers squeezed onto a narrow bench. Between them stood the kiln itself, brick skin glowing dull orange at the throat, warmth rolling off it in steady pulses that thinned the air. Close by, a bundle of alder slips rested on two crossed beams, bark still green-striped, scent sharp and damp against the drier smoke. Vaughn rubbed the remaining clay from his palms and offered a silent, sideways grin.
Winter lifted a cup from the waiting board, surprised again by the dense mineral weight settling into her fingers. She fit it onto the shelf beside a row of bowls, then reached for another, and another, stacking shapes until clay blurred into clay. Vaughn leaned near, their shoulders almost touching while they tried to coordinate the growing pattern without jostling the earlier pieces. The shelf timber creaked, a small warning that the arrangement neared its limit, yet Winter placed a vase whose lip still held dawn moisture. Ash swirled upward from the firebox when a log split, settling like grey snowflakes on sleeves already dusted white.
Warm air followed the ash and nudged a single peach petal through the open wall, the speck landing atop the last vase. Winter paused, thumb brushing the petal aside, and noticed the shelf bowing in the middle rather than at the ends. She met Vaughn’s glance; neither spoke, yet their shoulders set back as though the sound of that faint bow carried a demand no word could match. Together they lifted a smaller subset of cups from the crowded middle, moving them to the cooler bench where a cat now slept among curling shavings. The relieved wood straightened almost imperceptibly, and the remaining pieces settled with a hush that lasted longer than the previous creak.
Heat pulsed against their forearms again, yet the space beside the kiln felt wider, as if the breath of the building finally found room to circulate. Winter brushed ash from her sleeve, then traced one finger along the now-visible wood grain where the cups had sat, measuring the faint warmth left behind. She spoke at last, her voice low enough to stay inside the glow: "Looks lighter." Vaughn answered only with a nod, pushing the alder slips nearer the firebox mouth where embers waited like open jaws. A moment later, Winter leaned toward the peephole; her right hand hovered above the clay stoppered lid, the pads of her fingertips nearly grazing the warm handle.
