English 原文
Before Darla’s knees touched the pit floor, her right hand skimmed the grid’s nearest string, plucking it the way she once checked violin tuning between pieces. The faint vibration confirmed the line’s tension without a glance.
She settled into square B-4, the earth’s cross-section rising waist-high around her like low walls whose horizontal bands told a backward story—dark root-threaded topsoil, pale clay floor, charcoal line, older silence below. A pottery curve, no bigger than a fingernail, glimmered two rows away where sunlight sliced across the charcoal band. It had been there since morning, hardly discussed, simply another fact awaiting the slow arithmetic of brushes and trowels.
Ned knelt on the pit’s opposite edge, recording colour codes. “String looks loose here,” he said, tapping a peg whose anchor had begun to tilt. The midday warmth felt sluggish; even the dust hung lazy in still air. Yet every stroke needed kinetic accuracy because a single slip could smear layers that decades had kept distinct. Darla pressed two fingers against the peg; crumbly soil shifted, widening the gap. She tried to compress the loosened earth with the trowel’s flat spine, but the grains slithered away, refusing a firm seat. The grid sagged a millimetre, enough to skew measurements, enough to matter on the sketch pinned to Ned’s board.
Her wrist paused halfway through another push. Kitchen memory surfaced uninvited: evening light, dough, and the practiced roll that spread circles thin without tearing them. Trusting that old intuition, she laid the trowel aside, cupped both palms, and treated the soil like pastry, guiding it inward rather than piling it on top. The motion sought to squash air pockets before they formed; weight settled gradually, and the peg steadied. When she straightened, the altered string line cast a new shadow across the wall. The once-ordinary sherd now sat just above the charcoal, not inside it. That tiny elevation recast the timeline: the broken vessel belonged to the clay floor’s story, not to the vanished fire.
Ned leaned closer, camera ready, yet neither of them spoke about the implication. The pit felt subtly larger, as though the corrected grid had stretched its geometry wider. Afternoon light ran along the fresh alignment, stopping where the pottery waited, half-revealed, half-withheld. Darla picked up the soft brush, drew one slow breath, and let her shadow fall clear of the fragment. Her left fingertip hovered a breath above the exposed curve.
