English 原文
The winding key jutted from the brass plate at an uncomfortable tilt, as though someone had abandoned the turn midway through the morning wind.
Tess steadied it with her left hand while her right thumb followed the oil film that gleamed across a nearby gear. A mantle of pale green corrosion ringed the screw heads, softening their edges like moss on old stone. She began to wipe the residue, the tower’s steady tick settling around her wrists like shallow ripples against a wooden hull. Before the cloth completed its second pass, footsteps clattered on the narrow iron stair. She held the key still, listening as the sound rose through the shaft like a breath swelling inside a flute.
“Shipment’s here,” Nolan called, his voice bouncing off the masonry before his head appeared beneath the gear plate. Tess set the rag aside; the key stayed skewed, still awaiting the final quarter-turn. She followed him down the spiral, the pendant tick above thinning to a thread while stone swallowed the higher notes. At the loading arch, a small crate of fresh oil cans waited beside burlap sacks, their stencilled lettering smudged by last night’s drizzle. Nolan hefted the crate, grunted, then jerked his shoulder to keep it from sliding. “Grab the door?” he asked, though the latch had already shifted under his boot.
By the time they climbed back, afternoon light had crawled farther across the gear plate, bathing the skewed key in a narrow band of glare. Tess reached for it, then paused; the metal felt warmer than before, as though the sun had tried to quench its lingering chill. One floor above, the bell mechanism gave a testing clunk, and the sound reverberated down the column like a low drum roll. She tightened her grip, recalling how her predecessor complained that a late wind always fought back during heat. The key resisted for half a heartbeat, then yielded with a sudden ease that rocked her stance. Outside the slit window, a kingfisher skimmed the river stripe, its blue flash arriving just as the minute hand clicked forward.
She wiped a new line of oil across the bearing, noticing the cloth no longer matched the rhythm in her head. Nolan leaned on the sill, watching the weights creep slowly downward, yet said nothing. A soft hush settled once the bell gear locked, and the pendulum continued its long negotiation with gravity, tick after measured tick. The sunlight that once pinched a sharp numeral onto the wall now diffused across layers of dust, blurring edge and shadow alike. Beyond the window, water folded over itself at the bend, carrying the blue flash downstream until only the river’s broad murmur remained.
