English 原文
Through Cleo's headphones, a tight hiss crackled like brushed sand, while beyond the thin window a sparrow chirped into still mountain air.
She sat among tidy wooden furnishings, the warm vacuum tubes tinting the desk with gentle heat, certain her fingers remembered the children's hour frequency. A slight clockwise turn always slipped the knob into place, and a spherical amber light steadied itself, as reliable as sunrise. Outside, wind threaded through the antenna wire, yet only the headphone hiss reached her ears, dividing the room into audible and visible halves. Cleo uncapped her pencil, expecting the usual neat entry to fall between yesterday’s and tomorrow’s lines without a second thought.
Today, the knob met unusual drag; the capacitor's vanes brushed harder, and the expected voice failed to bloom out of the hiss. Static thickened, airy and sweet-edged, the way cotton candy vaporizes on a tongue yet leaves nothing you can hold. Cleo tapped the pencil, made a flurry of short strokes in the logbook, and frowned at the fresh column now missing its familiar call sign. The bakelite knob, once glossy, had gone matte and warm, like bread cooling toward stale before anyone notices the change. Somewhere beyond the static, a faint carrier tone wavered, slipping just out of reach whenever she nudged the dial by another hair.
She leaned back, letting the chair creak; a faint graphite scent rose, newer than the musty pages, telling her someone else had written here after midnight. “Did you move the dial earlier?” she asked toward the doorway, though only the antenna wire outside answered with a light hum. Silence pressed, neither confirming nor denying, and her earlier certainty thinned like paint stirred one time too many. She spun the knob backward, a quarter turn, paused when the resistance fluttered, then nudged it forward by millimeters, listening for any shred among the sweep of noise. The logbook’s edge still felt crisp, yet the middle pages had softened, seasoned by countless midwinter nights in the cabin.
A wavering voice finally edged into focus, not the jaunty storyteller of past afternoons but an unfamiliar cadence counting off coastal temperatures. Cleo left the knob where that fragile balance held, even though the sound flickered at every breath she took. Outside, twilight collected around the poles, erasing the bright paint Cleo had slapped on them the previous spring. Her fingers hovered above the key, then settled on the desk instead, graphite smudging the wood like ash. A cool draft slipped across the floorboards, touching her ankles and reminding her how long she had been sitting. Beside the headphones, the forgotten stick of cotton candy had collapsed into a glossy ribbon, cool and silent under the amber glow.
