English 原文
Every afternoon Celina lowered a bolt of cotton into the stone vat, counting seven breaths before the first lift; today the cloth resisted, heavier than yesterday. The vat liquid cooled her knuckles through the wooden tongs, yet a faint reminiscence of last week’s dye traced the rim like smoke caught in stone. She cleared her throat, the sound small against the tall door, and set the dripping length over the rack. The timber answered with a dry creak rather than its usual muted thud today. That slight change lodged in her hearing, as definite as a knot under fabric, though the room kept its slow rhythm of splatter and drip.
Celina lifted the cotton to the sunlight; the shade looked pale, two breaths short of the deep midsummer blue requested by Vera at the far bench. "Still shy of the mark," Vera murmured from the far bench, glancing at the cloth without walking over. Celina nodded and twisted the cloth between her fists with a motion borrowed from childhood dough kneading. That youthful pattern lived in her wrists before thought intervened, squeezing indigo back into the vat in slow spirals. Liquid pattered with soft exuberance across the vat lip, flecking her apron with blue droplets. The joinery of the rack, a quiet testament to forgotten craftsmanship, trembled as she added one more dip. She hoped the extra air would inspire the pigment to settle darker across the weave.
The added weight, wet and cool, pulled the lowest beam forward; the seasoned rope that cinched rack to post, once pliant, had gone furry and lax with years. Each new lift deepened the colour yet deepened the sag as well, turning the search for blue into a wobble of wood. Celina slid a foot against the base, steadying it, but the cotton’s edge touched the vat mouth, printing an unintended stripe where wood met stone. She paused, jaw tight, then rearranged the cloth, folding it double to shorten the hanging reach. The fold trapped air bubbles that surfaced in surprising bursts of green before gradually blooming blue.
When she stepped away, the cloth bore uneven bands—dark where doubled, lighter where air had lingered—an accident neither flawed nor perfect. Vera approached from the far bench, fingertips brushing blue along the cloth as she inspected the shade. "Leave it," she said, her voice even, eyes following the irregular gradient without a blink. Celina let the frame recline against the wall, compromise accepted for now: rack safe, shade altered. A single bead of liquid slid from the lowest hem and struck the floor, spreading a circle the size of a coin before soaking into dust. Afternoon sun slid lower, coolness pooled near the vat, and the earthy-sweet smell of indigo, thickened by repeated dips, clung to her sleeves and stayed there.
