English 原文
Ingrid lifted the wooden pick that lay across the bench, its tip stained a darker brown where another hand had paused mid-mark. Beside it rested a mound of dough, and a fine valley already sliced along the top, shallow yet deliberate, as if someone had tested a pattern then stepped away. Judson hovered at the sink, turning the crock of starter slowly to watch the surface bubble. “Looks like the loaf started telling its story early,” he said, but Ingrid only traced the line with her fingertip, unsure whether to erase or follow it.
She tried first to stretch the dough smooth, tucking edges under and pressing outward. Each push returned like elastic memory, leaving the faint groove stubbornly intact and opening a fresh quandary: smoothness or character? The dough’s skin warmed under her palms, yet the fine dust that rose from it coated her sleeve, a visible perplexity of tiny flakes. Heat drifted from the oven door as Judson swung it open to check the stone; a gnat darted toward the sweet air, a tiny pursuer of scent that swerved when Ingrid brushed it aside. She drew back, wiped her hands, and turned to feed the starter—two spoonfuls of flour, one of water—watching bubbles reorganize themselves while her attention wandered.
The stir left pale spirals on the crock wall, and those swirls echoed the valley on the loaf, both markings shaped by absent hands and quiet carbon dioxide. Ingrid paused, the spoon held aloft; then she settled the crock, returned to the bench, and set the wooden pick into the original groove rather than against it. One confident stroke deepened the line; three shorter cuts met it like tributaries, a pattern the earlier baker had perhaps begun yet never finished. Judson slid the peel beneath the shaped round, and together they eased it into the waiting heat. Steam curled from the loaf as Ingrid taps the hollow base once.
