Farther out, Owen traced a finger along the rim, feeling for tiny shells pressed into the old masonry; one shell held a faint spiral like a miniature fossil. The stone surface, smoothed by seasons of flowing water, shivered whenever the hum rose in pitch.

Owen set the spiral beside Tess’s row. A sudden gust clipped the pool, threw mist across their hands, and pushed the coin line out of place. One coin skittered toward the edge. Owen made a short lunge, missed, and the coin clanged against the bronze pipe. The strike cut through the fountain’s hum, and the pipe answered with a ringing note so tall and bright that even pigeons flapped upward in confusion. The hum wavered, then settled into a new, deeper register, and the coins trembled in sympathy along the rim.
