Pebbles Tip and Coins Splash in the Fountain -

English 原文
Damp stone and the sharp tang of old coins drifted from the fountain at noon. Darla pressed her palms on the cool rim and felt stray drops tap her knuckles. Beside her, Callum rolled a small bun between his fingers, breaking crumbs for nearby pigeons. A carved mentor crouched at the fountain’s center, water sliding from its stony cloak. The figure watched nothing, yet its shoulders caught mist like a teacher gathering chalk dust. Darla tapped a thin pebble against the rim, curious how long it could balance there. The pebble leaned, wobbled, then slid inside with a light plink and a crystal splash. Circles widened across the surface, shaking coins that rested like dull fish scales below. A faint thrill tremored through the stone, tickling her elbows as the ripples reached the rim.
She picked a rounder pebble, placed it nearer the mentor’s foot, and stepped back to watch. This one stayed upright, yet a passing pigeon tapped the rim; the stone teetered, toppled, disappeared. Callum laughed and started to expound the difference between smooth edges and flat edges. He shrugged, “Looks quick,” he said, water sputtering against the marble behind his words. His words floated above the water, lost under the fountain’s steady murmur before they reached Darla. Sunlight struck the spray, and tiny colors flickered inside the drifting mist like moving glass. Wanting a new sound, she balanced a small copper coin on the rim’s narrow edge. The coin shone, held for a breath, then tipped toward the basin as the pigeons shuffled. It hit the surface flat, slapped water upward, and the crystal drops cooled Darla’s cheek. Ripples spread in a new variety of rings, thick near the center and thin at the rim.
She tried stacking two pebbles, aiming for a tiny tower, but the upper stone kept sliding. After three quiet attempts, both pebbles lay inside the basin while the rim looked exactly unchanged. Water still arced over the mentor’s head, and Darla’s wet fingers pressed faint prints along the stone. She wiped her palms on her shorts; the prints blurred, but the tower never stood.
