Blake’s wrist rolled forward, sliding the broad wooden board beneath the silver tray. The familiar weight pressed back against his palms; flour rose in a pale cloud and settled over the small ceramic firefighter that guarded the timer.

The sun climbed higher. Its angle bent through the thick honey and painted an orange oval on one side of the oven door. Heat built there first, and the nearest loaf browned faster than the rest. Blake leaned closer; a sharp shine ran over the swelling crust. He wanted to salvage the whole batch, so his grasp tightened on the paddle handle. He eased the tray half a turn, yet the beam still burned the same spot. The cat’s tail flicked. With one quick rescue move, Blake nudged the honey jar three finger-widths left, and the hot oval slipped onto the stone floor instead. A faint hiss rose as the heat met scattered flour, then faded. A light brush of water followed the paddle and helped restore a smooth skin over the loaf’s darker patch.

The timer bell rang once; no loaf came out yet, but the glare stayed harmless on the tiles. Blake wiped the back of his arm across his forehead, leaving a pale ring of dough on his sleeve. The orange shimmer remained on the floor, quiet and steady.
