English 原文
Coarse sand scratched Oswin's fingertips while he tilted a dented tin scoop toward a broad wooden sieve. Morning light slid across the workbench. It caught crumbs from his early breakfast scattered among curls of dry wood. A brass model of an eagle perched on a dusty shelf. Weak reflections blinked as grains began to pour. He wanted a fine filler for a cracked toy boat. He tried to fractionate the mixed sand and sawdust in front of him. The mesh resisted; clumps stuck and blocked half the holes. Yet a thin stream still fell into a shallow tray below.
Jude leaned through the open doorway, bending under the low beam inside. He rubbed his sleeve across a dark section of the rim where older varnish had peeled. “Anything interesting under that sift?” he asked while small particles tapped the tray like dry rain. Oswin kept shaking; only a small fraction slipped through each time, slowly. He lifted the sieve higher and shook again with steady arms above. The vibration loosened a hidden lump; the whole pile shifted, then a dull clink rang out. A round brass button rolled clear, green with age, and stopped near Jude’s boot. The surprise made both of them pause right there. The sand, now mixed with button dust, formed uneven mounds that refused to settle flat. A faint glue smell drifted in from the window and met the cooler air from the yard.
Oswin scraped the mesh edge with a thin spatula, hoping the passage would widen. Each stroke released new puffs that drifted but soon the mesh clogged once more. He gathered the scattered grains, pressed them back toward the center, and tried another shake. The sieve groaned; coarse chips slid yet the finer powder still held above. His arms tightened, then lowered against his sides. The cracked boat waited unchanged on the sill. A rough crescent of sand lay around his shoes, and the clogged sieve rested on the bench.
