Gareth’s Wooden Wedge Quieting the Singing Chain -

English 原文
“Hear that whistle?” Jude leaned forward in the neighboring swing, his yak wool scarf flapping straight behind him like a signal flag. Gareth cocked his head; a single link above his seat produced that note, sharper than the canopy’s broad metallic hum. The engineers had overcome hurdles of weight and balance years ago, yet this stubborn whistle still threaded itself through the evening air. He tapped the safety bar once, testing whether vibration rather than wind caused the sound; the chain answered with the same bright cry. Below, the fairground lights blurred into rivers of red and yellow, offering no clue.
During boarding, a vendor had slipped Gareth a thin paper cone full of sugared almonds, wrapped in an extra napkin from the latest batch off the warming press. Now he peeled fibers from that napkin and, on each swoop past the platform, pressed a wad into the narrow gap where seat and chain-link met. The paper vanished instantly, ground flat by centrifugal pull, yet the whistle carried on, a ribbon drawn taut across the wind. He repeated the gesture, another shred, then another; each offering disappeared, and nothing changed. Scratches along the fiberglass seat formed their own silent narrative of past repairs, yet none hinted at an easy cure. Jude watched, eyebrows lifting with every try, but the wind stole whatever comment he might have sent across the gap.
On the fourth circuit he paused, palm hovering; more shreds would simply dissolve, so he snapped the slender wooden skewer that once held the almonds. The broken piece, smooth with sugar glaze, became a wedge slim enough to slide beside the restless link. He waited for the seat to swing nearest the column, then pressed the wood inward until resistance thickened and the vibration under his ribs dulled. One more breath, another half-centimetre, and the whistle vanished; in its place the canopy emitted a lower, almost watery groan that rippled through every chain. The surprise crossed Gareth’s face as a blink; Jude’s answering grin flashed by, carried outward on the next rotation.
As the operator eased back the throttle, the outward pull softened, and every chair began its slow inward drift, chains clicking to a calmer rhythm. With the whistle gone, wind patterns changed; Gareth could hear individual fragments of music rising from below, as though someone had sliced the fairground soundtrack into tidy stripes. He drew the remaining napkin fibers into his fist, feeling their gritty sugar and the faint grease they had absorbed, then tucked them into his pocket. When the seat hovered above the platform, he lifted one finger and tapped the safety bar again, this time so lightly that the metal offered no reply at all.
