Viggo knelt near the table and squeezed a small red bellows. Each puff sent air into a long balloon that curled like an intricate vine. Beside him stood a cookie jar shaped like a tiny caravan; its painted wheels showed chipped, jagged rims from years of use. On the counter, Tess threaded a sewing needle through a torn oven mitt while steam drifted from a covered pot. Outside the window, a draft fluttered the curtain and spun a row of paper pinwheels that hung from clothespins.

The bellows wheezed again, and the balloon stretched, ready for twisting. At the same moment, a sharp gust pushed through the window. Bubbles poured from the wand on the table, then rolled across the kitchen, wobbling above Selene the cat’s whiskers. One large bubble kissed the nearest pinwheel; it burst, sprinkling soap that darkened the paper blades. The added weight slowed the wheel, but the gust kept pressing, so the clothespin slid along the line and knocked a postcard from last summer’s vacation. The card slapped onto the pot lid, and condensed steam speckled its surface.

Selene leaped aside as herbs from a shelf tumbled, leaves scattering over the wet tiles. The breeze and the still-whirling pinwheels carried the loose leaves in circles. A stronger rush of air swept through the window. It plastered green fragments against the soap-streaked floor and folded the damp postcard over itself.
