Tin Lid Chase in the Cellar -

English 原文
"Hand me the tin lid," Winona whispered.
Theo slid the cool metal across the shelf edge, under the bare hanging bulb. Dust drifted from the stone ceiling while he reached for a jar on the top plank. They followed a simple principle: heavy jars remained low, lighter jars moved upward for daylight. Rearranging jars every spring had become their quiet ritual inside the cellar's cool walls.
A striped cat wandered near stacked sacks, trying to scavenge crumbs that glimmered around broken hazelnut shells. The small investigator sniffed a walnut, batted it aside, then paused at the spinning tin lid. Light slapped silver across the floor, and the cat's eyes tracked the bright circle with care. Cool air brushed Winona's arms, carrying a faint smell of damp earth and gingery preserves.
When Theo lifted a courageous stretch toward a wobbling jar, the lid slipped from Winona's fingers. It clattered, struck the floor, and rolled straight into the cat's waiting paw. The sudden collision sent the lid skidding toward the stair, while the startled cat darted after. Metal rang against wood, echoed once, and continued spinning in a slower circle beside the bottom step. Winona steadied the jar, and Theo placed it safely on the lower shelf, maintaining their tidy pattern. The cat padded after the shrinking metal ring, still batting at its bright edge each time it slowed. Two neat rows of clean jars now lined the fresh chalk mark they had drawn. Theo pressed the chalk once more, thickening the final line beside Winona's earlier stroke.
