A striped cat crouched near the back-door step and blinked at sunlight that slipped through the curtains. Warm air carried a faint pepper smell while light danced over the bowl’s wavy steel surface. Jarvis lifted a wooden spoon and let the tip touch the inside curve. A bright ring shot outward, bounced off the cupboard doors, and fluttered across the cat’s whiskers. The animal’s ears twitched, then settled again. Thin flour dust formed a pale layer over one corner of the counter, and the spoon left short tracks through it. He tapped a second time, turning the handle, and the pitch dropped, as if the metal echoed from deeper inside.

Curiosity pulled his hand toward the glass lid. He raised it a finger’s breadth and released; the lid landed with a dull rattle, shaking the stacked saucers nearby. For a moment the vibration built into a low humming sheet that filled the small kitchen. The cat rose, arched, and padded farther from the sound. A plush rabbit perched on a narrow shelf shivered, slipped forward, and flopped onto the counter, its soft body swallowing the hum into silence. Jarvis trusted the shelf to hold, yet the toy now lay at his wrist, motionless.

He pressed his palm over the lid to test if another drop would stay quiet. A faint smudge of flour clung to his skin, yet the glass still quivered against the bowl’s edge.
