故事內容
English 原文
A ripple of applause floated through the cotton screen while, behind it, Gareth’s fingers pressed against cool bamboo. The audience’s merged shadow wavered on the white fabric, thin as mist, yet the backstage lamp poured steady warmth onto his knuckles. A horse silhouette trotted crisply across the glowing field; when Gareth drew the rod back an inch, the shape ballooned, its edges softening. Each pivot sent a faint tap through the stick, and leather joints creaked like distant floorboards. He glanced toward the rack—every slot full—then guided the horse toward the waiting octagon tower cut-out that framed tonight’s finale.
That afternoon, in the empty hall, Graeme had leaned over the long table, polishing the moon princess figure—an exemplar of the old master’s knife work—while Gareth sorted props by scene. The sparkler puppet, a starburst of foil points, should have lain between the dragon and the jack-o'-lantern, yet the gap on the felt stayed bare. “Probably slipped under another sheet,” Graeme said, brushing aside scraps. Gareth lifted corners, felt only grainy paper, and decided the show could ignite without that single flash; he stacked the puppets in order, bamboo rods aligned like bundled arrows.
Now, mid-performance, his free hand hunted that missing rod and found only air. The horse finished its run; the octagon tower waited, empty window glowing. A pause thickened. Gareth drew the jack-o'-lantern from its peg instead, rolling its curved grin until the light caught every scored groove. He hesitated—this face belonged to harvest tales, not palace fireworks—yet the blank space on the screen asked for motion. The leather pumpkin edged forward, mouth opening wider as it neared the cloth, and its shadow burst into a round, unexpected sun where the sparkler used to flare. Children on the far side gasped; someone clapped once, uncertain but eager.
Graeme’s whisper brushed Gareth’s ear, “Keep it turning.” Gareth did, rotating the puppet so the teeth flashed like petals, a substitute sparkle. When the octagon tower swallowed that rolling sun, the tower itself seemed to glow from within, and the scene closed with a sharper hush than rehearsals ever earned. Gareth slid the pumpkin back onto the rack, stepped away from the lamp, and lifted the hanging blackout curtain. Light from the house spilled across the floorboards, and he walked toward it, rods rattling softly in his sleeve.
Behind him, the horse rested against the rail, a fine dust of leather still drifting from its mane. The jack-o'-lantern leaned forward, its grin fixed at the angle that had fooled the tower. Heat lingered on the bamboo grips, while the octagon frame on the screen held a faint orange halo that slowly cooled to grey.
