English 原文
Nell stepped over the low door lip into the amber room, palms already rubbed clean on her jeans. Warm resin air pressed close near the bench, lamp pooled on a square of felt, and glass jars caught a dusty shine. Grant looked up from a magnifying glass and slid aside a small knobby piece, its rind the color of buttered toast. She lifted it; under the lamp, a threadlike line ran inside, straight and dark, and her finger hovered above the spot. A skylark flitted beyond the half-open window, its sound rising clean over the lane as Nell set the amber on the felt.
She tucked a soft pad under the piece and set coarse paper to it, long even strokes building a scritch that steadied her breath. Friction warmed the resin, and a thin pine scent lifted, like a cupboard opened after a long day of sun on trees. Between coarse and fine sat a quiet arbitration in her fingertips—how much to take, how much to leave on this face. Grant rested the fine sheet nearby and said, "Here," then let his hands fall back, the bench taking his weight without a squeak. She eased her wrist; she relieved the pressure to a whisper and listened to the change in rhythm where the surface began to smooth.
Under the glass, the straight line she trusted bent at the edge, and a slight fissure she had overlooked glinted where old rind met new. She shifted the angle; the thread broke into two faint bubbles separated by amber shiver, not a leaf vein as the first glance promised. Long strokes became small circles near that place, and then smaller still, her shoulder lowering to bring the lamp’s reflection across a cleaner window. Nell stopped when the brightness met her eye; she held her breath without meaning to and heard the neighbour’s radio murmur through the wall.
She set the paper flat on the bench and moved the piece a finger’s width, not chasing the bubbles, not sure where the next pass belonged. "It’s warm," she said, and Grant nodded, leaving the apron folded over the chair, its creases already glossy where hands had brushed it clean. They left the lamp on; the piece stayed halfway between matte and glow, its window unfinished, the ancient forest’s breath clinging faintly to the air. The skylark’s thin ribbon of sound went on beyond the half-open window.
