English 原文
Through the open window, the harbour's masts shivered in bright air while, inside, cushions held steady ground and wood breathed warmed dust. A sliver of sunlight grazed the smallest bowl's rim, and a pale line on the metal caught it like a scratch. Ula balanced on her knees, planted her shins, and lifted the bowl, weight settling into her palms with a clue about its voice. Across the floor, larger bowls formed a low rampart on their round pads, dimples in their bronze shifting as light angled. Hattie sat nearby, ankles crossed on a cushion; she held out the mallet and said, "Here." Ula rolled her shoulders once, then centered her wrist above the lip so the circle could stay even.
The first glide gave nothing; leather brushed bronze without catching, so her arm slowed, elbow tucked, and the second pass whispered into a low hum. Vibration ran up her forearms, and her stance settled, knees reading the floor's firmness while her breath matched the slow circle. A shallow layer of water inside trembled, then gathered into ripples that formed squares along the rim, as if the note mapped itself. She paused, pinched a drop from the bowl, and tended the depth with a spoon resting near the pads, widening the ripples and softening the pitch. A draught moved the hanging cloth, the tone wobbled, and Ula shifted her center to keep the circle smooth while the wobble re-centred itself. Her wrist kept its small duty: a patient circuit that fed the hum only while bone and wood agreed on speed.
Two bowls rang together when she set the larger one near and tapped it; a slow beating pulsed between them, and her timing faltered, then resumed. She angled the small bowl toward the window and turned it; the pale line brightened, slid along the rim, and no longer read like damage. It matched the path of countless circles, a polish where hands had traveled, wearing time into the metal without cutting it. Ula stopped mid-arc, then continued anyway, letting the beats drift in and out while her spine adjusted to change she could not chart. Hattie said, "It's open," and the strip of light from the window stretched wider across the rim as the afternoon edged along. Ula lowered the smallest bowl to the pad now warmed by a broad band of sun and rested her palm on its steady bronze.
