English 原文
Gemma pinched the combed hemp as if it would give like wool, and her grip shifted mid-squeeze when a faint rasp steadied her hand instead. A sparrow shot through the open end and clung to a beam above the walk, bright eye fixed on the long lane of light. Gareth stood at the cast-iron frame, sleeve rolled, and turned the crank assuredly; with each turn the brass ratchet let off plucky little taps, a toy xylophone scattered thin as she eased backward. Her weight settled over her heels, then corrected to the balls of her feet, the strand tightening between frame and palm. Sun bars cut across the floorboards; the twist ran along the strand like a pale wave, and the low creak climbed a note when her pace steadied.
The sparrow adjusted its stance along the rafter, toes gripping the rough wood while the shed’s draft ruffled the short feathers at its throat. It tipped, hopped, and tipped again, testing the distance to a scrap of fibre caught near a peg, the kind that snags and waits until someone sweeps. Below the beam, an old parlour chair sat with a cracked cane seat, a place to set a coil between lengths, and its top rail showed a rubbed patch where hands had once, without thinking, rested. Dust lifted in a thin ribbon near the open door and fell again. The bird watched the ribbon’s sway, then returned to the scrap and jabbed once, twice, missing, then holding still.
Gemma’s shoulders braced as the twist tightened; her backward steps shortened to match the rising note, and the distance to Gareth lengthened by a plank with each breath. “Click’s true,” he said, glancing along the line. She kept her gaze below the sparrow’s beam, heel hovering over a darkened board before planting and taking the next small retreat. The scrap near the peg quivered when the draft returned, and the bird shifted again. She could not reconcile that busy hop with the way it had arrived and gone still; the pattern changed right over her center of balance. At the edge of her palm a loose tuft drifted free; her other hand stayed open, not catching it, while the creak rose and then held.
Above, the sparrow lowered its head until the scrap was almost beak-length, then checked and looked down the long shed while Gemma’s stance steadied. She paused mid-step, weight split between back foot and front, and lifted the loose tuft between thumb and palm, its twist undone, its fibres soft as morning chaff. “I see it,” she said, and she bent her knees a fraction so the strand held even while her arm rose. The master’s turning stayed even, and the ratchet counted on. She tossed the pale tuft toward the open end, not at the bird but into the same drifting ribbon of air the bird had watched. The pale tuft rode the slow air toward the rafter.
