English 原文
Without looking, Niall seated the lever on the pin and slid a rubber mute snug between neighboring strings beneath the propped lid. His hand followed that path the way it always did here, long before his thoughts reached the bright interior. Furniture polish and warm felt rose first, a metallic tang of iron underneath, and a resin edge breathing out of the spruce. A volcanic stone wedged the window wider; a dry breeze carried faint brine that mingled with polish while the copper-wound bass looked scaly. On the side table near Orla’s chair, a glass of water showed tiny rings whenever a low key sent energy through the frame.
Niall tapped the fork against his knee, set its stem on the bridge, and the tone ran through bone before spilling into the air. He added another mute, pressed the pedal to lift dampers, and threaded a soft cloth strip between unisons to quiet their chatter. The room grew busy with careful taps and breaths, and beats between nearly matched notes began to stagger, then slow, then briefly hurry again. He turned the lever a fraction, paused as the handle resisted, and felt the pin warm from earlier nudges. A nub of tailor’s chalk rolled from his pocket to the bench rail, leaving a pale triangle on his thumb when he caught it. "New strings?" Orla asked, her shoes drawing closer beneath the chair while the mantel clock measured a small space between clicks.
"Not new," he said, and sunlight crept higher on the lid until every aid he had placed made the piano orderly and strangely muffled. He held a key halfway and waited; the room’s smell slipped from musty polish toward iron and sweet wool, like a milliner’s morning stockroom. His hand hovered above the long cloth threaded through the middle section, closed, then hovered again, a private tempo he did not complete. He pulled the strip free in one tidy run, and the dampened mutter thinned, leaving brightness where the weaving had hidden the plain wire. Orla leaned forward without rising, and said, "There," her voice resting lightly on the new ring without nudging it anywhere.
He set the chalk aside, let the pedal rest, and met the fork’s tone again, listening for the pulse that disappears when wires agree. The beats slowed until no wave crossed the other, and the untouched strings’ sympathetic shimmer softened into presence rather than haze. The clock was smaller, a branch brushed the glass once, and the air above the keys stayed still enough to make every scent distinct. A note answered beneath his fingertip and kept traveling, its wave skating under the lid and across the table toward the water’s rim.
