English 原文
A narrow, cloudless stripe on the jar's inner glass left a clear gap between slow beads of condensation.
Arlo moved closer; warm breath met the cool wall and fogged everything except that thin lane of dry glass. Light bent along the vaulted curve, and the whole jar rose like a glass cupola above the small hill. On the cork coaster, the base felt steady and faintly warm where sun edged in from the window. Phoebe, at the desk edge, labeled the notebook and said, "This marker smells strong today," without looking up. At the material tray, a strip of larch bark lay beside bright moss, its underside damp and springy under his fingertips. The pebble waited, smooth and cool; the charcoal band in the jar gave a dry, mineral scent when nudged. Tweezers touched the rim with a small click, and the magnifying glass showed starry tips where tiny leaves spread.
He wanted a fern frond standing at the far back, under that stripe, so a taller shape could shade the shorter moss. The mouth allowed only a narrow angle; the stem bent, and the tweezers scraped the glass with a faint tick. "It's tight at this angle," Arlo said, loosening his grip and easing the frond back onto the tray's soft towel. He squeezed the misting bottle once; cool spray pattered, and the view turned hazy where droplets gathered and ran together. He turned the jar a quarter round to watch; the beads joined and slid along the clear stripe, cutting a wet channel. Through the lens, early moss pressed firm into the top layer, but the new patch skated whenever the glass grew slick. If he had kept misting to get a clearer view, the glass would have stayed milky and the sliding would have worsened. His left hand left the frond and closed around the smooth pebble; his right placed the larch bark as a short chute. He guided the stone along the bark, then lifted the strip away; the pebble stood like a small belltower near the stripe. Water met its edge and broke into slower beads, which clung and dropped in softer beats, leaving the moss seated and still. Phoebe turned a page nearby; paper rasped, and the half-open window cooled the back of his wrist. A darker curve marked the topsoil where the quick water had moved before, a quiet track settling under the new arrangement. Arlo tapped the stone once with a fingertip and left a thin crescent print on the soil.
