English 原文
The sun slid free of a cloud, and a metallic tang sharpened above the worktable. An amber trapezoid of glass rested beside an austere zinc channel, their sea-smooth edges tinting the tracing paper. On the paper, numbers lay within pencil lines while amber and emerald beams overlapped into a new olive patch. At the adjacent bench, a quiet solder hiss set a faint sweetness on the back of the mouth. The zinc came stayed cool, but the glass, sun-warmed, left the tongue guessing at stone after a breath. The H-shaped metal creaked softly where a curve had been set earlier, a flavorless sound that still left a briny aftertaste. Cloud edge moved again, and the coloured patches crawled across the austere pattern like slow syrup.
Corinne set an emerald crescent against the H-shaped channel while Hartley angled the frame to match the austere pencil pattern. The piece clicked neatly; a second piece, a sleet-pale rhombus, answered with a dull tap and wobbled in the lip. They paused as the brush swept grinding dust into a tray with a soft cadence, bristle strokes counting the space between tries. Corinne lifted the pale rhombus toward the tall window, and the room tasted briefly of tin as light thickened through it. Beyond the pane, a lark bounced along the hedge, its outline bending inside the glass like a drawn line in water.
Set low over the tracing paper, the rhombus looked nearly blank; held higher, it poured a shy blue that the table caught. Where that wash slid across the amber beam, an olive rested on the pattern in a small reciprocity neither shard carried alone. Hartley nodded once. "Here," he said, offering the narrow brush across the frame. She warmed a coil of putty between thumb and forefinger until its mellow taste kissed the air, then pressed it into the loose gap. The channel firmed, but Corinne kept the rhombus aloft for a breath longer, watching the lark pass through its colour.
Cloud cover returned, flattening every shard to jewel-surface; her raised hand hovered mid-height, wrist tightening. When the sun slipped out again, the rhombus filled with sky, and the hedge bird dissolved into wobble and reformed on the far glass. Corinne lowered the piece to the frame, then stopped halfway and tilted it a fraction so the blue would catch the window instead of the bench. "It's open," Hartley said, holding the came steady without touching her grip. She pressed the rhombus into the channel again, slower this time, and the click landed light on her tongue.
