English 原文
Every low tide, Flora knelt by an oval rock basin, and today her paused hand met a faint tick from below.
She immersed one fingertip and watched an anemone contract in sequence, ring first and then the center, a tiny latch clicking shut.
Kieran crouched beside her with a pocket encyclopedia held like a small slate, angling it to shade the glare without touching the water.
The surface brightened into a pale-to-deep gradient, green near the rim and smoky blue in the middle, while the outer sea kept its implacable slap against the shelf.
“Here,” he said, lowering the book just enough to carve a cool rectangle over the pool.
The rectangle steadied the colors, yet their own nearness set a new problem humming: their breath ruffled the surface and a hermit crab paused with one foot raised.
Flora tightened her shoulders and moved her mouth away from the waterline, but the book’s edge threw a shadow across a ledge, and a pair of tiny fish whisked into a crease with no sound at all.
They traded space without speaking, her hand flat to the rock, his wrist angled higher, and still the pool answered their arrangements with small changes neither of them asked for.
Flora lifted the encyclopedia higher to test the first discovery, holding shade without movement, and nothing in the anemone shifted; its fringe stayed open like a tiny sea flower frozen mid-sway.
Only when she grazed the surface again did the fringe close, slower this time, a sluggish purse that finished with a soft inward pop.
Kieran tipped his head toward the rim, listening, then the book wobbled as his elbow brushed a barnacle, and ripples slid across the rectangle’s edge.
“Hear that?” he murmured.
“Only the slap,” she answered, the shelf’s rhythm muting the pool’s small clicks whenever a wave struck just right.
Her finger hovered, then retreated; she tried once more, drawing the lightest line and stopping halfway as the anemone began its ring-first lock.
Solving one thing tugged the other tighter: the shade cured the glare but spooked the quick fish; their breath cleared, the soundscape thinned, and the hermit crab resumed its staccato step that vanished under the next hard slap.
They found a narrow balance—book high enough for light, bodies still enough for sound—yet every improvement pressed somewhere else, and the basin kept its own rules without fuss.
Flora eased the book from Kieran’s hand and set it down beside a dry patch of salt; his palm left the rock and rested on his knee.
They watched without adding more motion, and the water held its delicate hush between strikes.
The hermit crab kept time with its soft, irregular click along the stone.
