Sullivan pulled the heavy door, and warm air rolled out across the tiles. Cora stood on a knee-high wooden stool at the flour-dusted counter. Heat brushed her cheeks while crusts on the racks began their soft crackle. Amber light from the oven mouth colored the metal scoops, and steam hissed faintly. A bakery cat blinked on the windowsill. It lifted its nose toward the heat.

Cora slid a sheet of parchment closer and placed star cookies in rows. Sullivan set a hot tray nearby, and a cloud of steam rose. Water beaded on the glass jar, then fell onto sugar and made it cling. Sticky grains held her fingertips when she tried to lift a cookie edge. She tapped them in the small mound of flour and shook off the excess. Earlier, in the cool pantry, Cora snapped a chocolate square cleanly in two. Here, near the warm racks, another square bent and smeared across the star. The cat watched from the sill, whiskers forward, and gave one slow blink. "Is the basket light enough?"

Cora carried the parchment to the pantry shelf, where the air stayed cool. The bend settled; the chocolate firmed again, and the sugar released her fingers. She brought the tray back, and Sullivan eased a cooling basket to the front. Crusts ticked as they cooled, then a bright crackle ran through the line. Two flour handprints, one large and one small, marked the counter beside the mound. Sullivan slid the basket against those prints while Cora straightened a loaf and tapped.
